Background of the Study
Government policies play a crucial role in safeguarding historical artifacts, yet their effectiveness in Oron Local Government Area remains under-examined. Over recent years, the enforcement of preservation regulations has become increasingly challenged by bureaucratic inefficiencies and inadequate funding (Ibrahim, 2023). Artifacts that reflect the region’s rich cultural and historical narrative are at risk due to policy lapses and inconsistent implementation of conservation measures (Obi, 2024). The study of policy impacts is vital in understanding how legislative frameworks, administrative actions, and local stakeholder involvement converge to protect heritage assets. Recent debates among scholars suggest that while some policies have improved artifact preservation, others fall short of addressing the evolving challenges posed by urbanization and environmental factors (Uche, 2025). This research examines the current policy landscape, analyzes implementation gaps, and considers the socio-economic factors that influence policy effectiveness. By doing so, it aims to provide recommendations for enhancing the protection of historical artifacts and ensuring that policies are adaptive to both local needs and emerging threats.
Statement of the Problem
Historical artifacts in Oron face deterioration partly due to inconsistent and poorly enforced government policies. While policies exist to protect cultural heritage, gaps in implementation and funding have resulted in significant losses of historical items. The disconnect between policy formulation and practical enforcement has left many artifacts vulnerable to neglect and illicit exploitation. This study seeks to identify the shortcomings of current government policies and understand their impact on artifact preservation, thereby proposing measures to bridge the policy-practice gap (Uche, 2025).
